2003.11.28 Extracts from an item in "Hello Digby Neck" a newsletter of the Digby Neck Community Development Association.

FROM: Marilyn Stanton, Treasurer, Partnership for the Sustainable Development of Digby Neck & Islands Society (commonly called 'STOP THE QUARRY' GROUP) Sandy Cove, N.S.

1. There is a degree of frustration in the community. The process "has been ongoing for the last 20 months and there are no visible results." The Society has more than 350 members. "HOWEVER, the Society is not the only group of people on Digby Neck opposing the quarry. In actuality, the Society is part of a "COALITION" of those fighting the quarry. There is DNCDA itself: there is a Fishermen's Group: there is the Community of Little River, to mention a few."

2. The Society is "working with an Environmental lawyer and a CEAA expert, who taught the CEAA (Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency) process at Acadia University. These people have been extremely helpful in preparing the Society's comments on the draft Federal-Provincial agreement and in providing information on the environmental assessment process. We are also identifying 'expertise' in the various issues or areas that will need to be covered by the developer in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that will be submitted to the Review Panel."

3. "To date, the Government has not set up the Public Registry (with info. at the Library in Digby); the Review Panel's three members have not been picked; the draft agreement has not been finalized, etc. etc. We cannot control these events; however we have asked our MLA, Harold Theriault to prompt the provincial government to act immediately and responsibly to get on with things. We are in frequent contact with CEAA to monitor the progress of the environmental assessment process."

4. The Society has collected relevant materials at 27 Bay Shore Road, Sandy Cove.
